About us

The history of the Pilsen Ballet goes back to the mid-1860s which is why Pilsen belongs to theatres with a long ballet tradition. Until 1945, the company’s activities were modest and the repertory was small; ballet often served as addition to operas and operettas. However, the Pilsen theatre has always been a place where Czech professional dancers developed and later performed at the National Theatre in Prague.

Jiří Pokorný, the current head of the company, strives for a broad range of genres. In practice this means regular inclusions of world classics in the repertory and, at the same time, a search for titles that bring new choreographic and directing techniques, which leads to a regular invitation of Czech and foreign choreographers and directors. Under the leadership of Jiří Pokorný, the Pilsen company has become one of the leading domestic dance troupes with both domestic and international success, and the company members get regularly nominated for the most prestigious artistic awards.

In addition to the repertory, the company regularly organizes ballet gala nights with the participation of foreign stars and informal Ballet Studios. A new feature is Ballet Inspiration, during which the dancers present themselves in the roles of choreographers.
